Toponymy

As is commonly known, the naming of streets and the assignment of building numbers are essential for territorial referencing, postal addressing, and the location of buildings or spaces. Moreover, they are required in any administrative process or document where an address and personal identification are necessary, from the citizen’s card to the driver’s license, among many others. Despite their relevance in all our lives, there are still many streets without names or that are inadequately referenced, as well as a significant number of buildings without assigned numbers. This often results in difficulties with registrations, loss of mail, among other issues.
To address this situation, in 2016, a process was initiated to assign names to unnamed streets or redefine others that were inadequately referenced, as a condition for the immediate assignment of building numbers.
As part of this process, two public participation sessions were held (April 23 and October 7, 2016) to assign names to the streets of Armação de Pêra, during which important contributions were gathered. These were followed by other phases of the process, culminating in the final approval of the proposed street names at the City Council meeting on December 10, 2018, followed by public disclosure.
Aware of the importance of this issue, and knowing that the Municipality of Silves has already begun implementing street name plaques in 2023, which will practically allow the population to know the assigned name of their street, we believe it is appropriate to share the final map where the newly proposed street names are listed.
